76. Aspiring for Happiness
행복을 열망함
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, aspiring for these three kinds of happiness, a wise person should guard virtuous conduct. What are the three? Aspiring ‘May praise come to me,' a wise person should guard virtuous conduct. Aspiring ‘May I become wealthy,' a wise person should guard virtuous conduct. Aspiring ‘Upon the perishing of the body at death may I be reborn in a good bourn, in a heavenly world,' a wise person should guard virtuous conduct. These are the three kinds of happiness aspiring for which a wise person should guard virtuous conduct."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 현명한 사람은 이들 세 종류의 행복을 열망하면서 계행(戒行)을 지켜야 하지요. 셋이 무엇일까요? 현명한 사람은 ‘내게 명예가 오기를’이라고 열망하면서 계행(戒行)을 지켜야 하지요. 현명한 사람은 ‘부자가 되기를’이라고 열망하면서 계행(戒行)을 지켜야 하지요. 현명한 사람은 ‘죽어서 몸이 사라지는 순간 좋은 곳, 천상세계에 다시 태어나기를’이라고 열망하면서 계행(戒行)을 지켜야 하지요. 현명한 사람이 열망하면서 계행을 지켜야 하는 세 종류의 행복이 이런 것들이지요.”
Aspiring for three kinds of happiness
The wise person should guard virtue:
Praise, the obtaining of property,
Rejoicing in heaven hereafter.
If one who does no evil
Associate with an evil-doer,
He is suspected of evil
And his disrepute grows.
Whatever person one befriends,
Whomever one associates with,
One becomes of like quality,
One becomes like one's companion.
The follower and the followed,
One who contacts and one contacted,
Are like an arrow coated with poison
That contaminates its quiver.
Fearing contamination the wise person
Should not have evil friends.
A man who ties up putrid fish
With some blades of kusa-grass
Makes the kusa-grass smell putrid;
So it is with those who follow fools.
But a man who wraps tagara powder
In the broad leaf of a tree
Makes the leaf smell fragrant;
So it is with those who follow sages.
Therefore as with the leaf-container,
Understanding the outcome for oneself,
The unvirtuous should not be followed,
A wise should follow the virtuous.
The unvirtuous lead a one to hell,
The virtuous help one reach heaven.
현명한 사람이라면 세 종류의 행복을
열망하면서 계를 지켜야 하네:
명예, 재산 획득,
내생에 천상에서 [누리는] 기쁨.
악을 행하지 않는 사람이라도
만약 악행을 한 사람과 어울린다면,
죄를 짓지 [않았을까] 의심을 받게 되고
불명예가 커져가네.
어떤 사람과 친구가 되든
더불어 어울리는 사람이 누구이든,
성품이 비슷한 사람이 되고
자기 동료와 비슷하게 되네.
뒤따르는 사람과 이끄는 사람,
접촉하는 사람과 접촉을 받는 사람은
독을 바른 화살과도 같아서
화살통 속의 [독이 없던] 화살을 더럽히네.
[그러니] 현명한 사람은 더렵혀질까 두려워하며
나쁜 친구를 사귀지 말아야 하네.
쿠사 풀 잎사귀들로
썩은 생선을 묶는 사람은
[생선을 묶은] 쿠사 풀이 썩은 냄새를 풍기게 하니;
어리석은 이들을 따르는 사람들과의 [사귐]도 그와 같네.
그러나 널따란 나뭇잎으로
타가라 향 가루를 싸는 사람은
나뭇잎도 향기를 풍기게 하니;
성자를 따르는 사람들과의 [사귐]도 그와 같네.
그러므로 잎에 담는 내용물과의 경우와 마찬가지로,
스스로 그 결과를 잘 살펴서
현명한 사람은 계를 지키지 않는 사람을 따르지 말고
계를 지키는 사람을 따라야 하네.
계를 지키지 않는 사람은 [다른] 사람을 지옥으로 인도하고
계를 지키는 사람은 [다른] 사람이 천상에 이르게 도와주네.
