75. A Rainless Cloud
비가 오지 않는[건조한] 구름
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, these three kinds of persons are found existing in the world. What three? One who is like a rainless cloud, one who rains locally, and one who rains everywhere.
Now what kind of person, bhikkhus, is like a rainless cloud? Here, a certain person is not a giver to anyone; he does not give food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, lodging, and lamps to recluses and brahmins, to the poor, destitute, and needy. This kind of person is like a rainless cloud.
Now what, bhikkhus, is the kind of person who rains locally? Here, a certain person is a giver to some but not a giver to others. Food, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, lodging, and lamps he gives only to some recluses and brahmins, to some of the poor, destitute, and needy, but not to others. This is the kind of person who rains locally.
Now what, bhikkhus, is the kind of person who rains everywhere? Here, a certain person gives to all. He gives food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, lodging, and lamps to all recluses and brahmins, to the poor, destitute, and needy. This is the kind of person who rains everywhere.
These, bhikkhus, are the three kinds of persons found existing in the world."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 세상에는 이들 세 종류의 사람들이 현존하는 것으로 알려졌소. 무엇이 셋일까요? 비가 오지 않는 구름과 같은 사람, 지역적으로만 비를 내리는 사람 그리고 모든 곳에 비를 내리는 사람이지요.
비구들이여! 그러면 어떤 종류의 사람이 비가 오지 않는 [건조한] 구름과 같은 사람인가요? 여기 어떤 사람이 있는데, 그는 어느 누구에게도 베풀지 않는 사람이지요. 그는 먹을 것․마실 것․옷․탈 것․꽃다발․향․고약․침상․숙소와 등불을 수행자와 바라문들에게, 빈곤한 사람들에게 주지 않지요. 이런 종류의 사람이 비가 오지 않는 [건조한] 구름과 같은 사람이지요.
비구들이여! 그러면 어떤 종류의 사람이 지역적으로만 비를 내리는 사람일까요? 여기 어떤 사람이 있는데, 그는 어떤 사람에게는 베풀지만 다른 사람들에게는 베풀지 않는 사람이지요. 먹을 것․마실 것․옷․탈 것․꽃다발․향․고약․침상․숙소와 등불을 오직 일부 수행자와 바라문들에게, 일부 빈곤한 사람들에게만 베풀고, 다른 사람들에게는 베풀지 않지요. 이것이 지역적으로만 비를 내리는 종류의 사람이지요.
비구들이여! 그러면 어떤 종류의 사람이 모든 곳에 비를 내리는 사람일까요? 여기 어떤 사람은 모든 사람들에게 베풀지요. 그는 먹을 것․마실 것․옷․탈 것․꽃다발․향․고약․침상․숙소와 등불을 모든 수행자와 바라문들에게, 빈곤한 사람들에게 베풀지요. 이런 종류의 사람이 모든 곳에 비를 내리는 종류의 사람이지요.
비구들이여! 이들이 세상에 현존하는 것으로 여겨지는 세 종류의 사람들이지요.“
Neither to recluses nor brahmins
Nor to the poor and destitute
Does he distribute his store
Of food and drink and gods;
That base person is called
"One like a rainless cloud."
To some he does not give,
To some he offers alms;
That one wise people call
"One who rains locally."
A person renowned for his bounty,
Compassionate towards all beings,
Distributes alms gladly.
"Give! Give!" he says.
Like a great storm cloud
That thunders and rains down
Filling the levels and hollows,
Saturating the earth with water,
Even so is such a person.
Having righteously gathered wealth
Which he obtains by his own effort,
He fully satisfies with food and drink
Whatever beings live in need.
수행자들에게도 바라문들에게도
빈곤한 사람들에게도 자기 창고의
먹을 것과 마실 것 그리고 [다른] 물건들을
나누어주지 않네.
저 비열한 인간은
“비가 오지 않는 [건조한] 구름과 같은 사람”이라고 부르네.
어떤 사람들에게는 주지 않고
어떤 사람들에게는 구호품을 주네.
현명한 사람들은 그 사람을
“지역적으로만 비를 내리는 사람”이라고 부르네.
모든 존재[衆生]들에 대해 자애심이 있고,
도량이 넓다고 해서 명성 있는 사람은
기꺼이 구호품을 나누어주네.
그는 “베푸시오! 베푸시오!”라고 말하네.
마치 평지와 골짜기를 채우고
대지를 물로 흠뻑 적셔주면서
천둥을 치고 비를 퍼붓는
큰 구름처럼
그런 사람도 그와 똑 같네.
자기 노력으로 취득하는 재산을
정당하게 모았으니
그는 어떤 존재[衆生]들이든 필요로 하면 살고 있는 이들을
먹을 것과 마실 것으로 완벽하게 충족시키네.
