74. Sons
아들
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, these three kinds of sons are found existing
in the world. What three? The superior kind, the similar kind,
and the inferior kind.
Now what, bhikkhus, is the superior kind of son?
In this instance a son has a mother and father who have
not gone for refuge to the Buddha, to the Dhamma, and to
the Sangha; who do not abstain from taking life, from taking
what has not been given, from wrong conduct in sensual desires, from false speech, and from intoxicating drink
leading to negligence; who are unvirtuous and of bad
conduct. But the son is one who has gone for refuge to the Buddha, to the Dhamma, and to the Sangha; who abstains
from taking life, from taking what has not been given,
from wrong conduct in sensual desires, from false speech,
and from intoxicating drink leading to negligence; who is
virtuous and of good conduct. This, bhikkhus, is the superior
kind of son.
Now what, bhikkhus, is the similar kind of son?
In this instance a son has a mother and father who have
gone for refuge to the Buddha ... who abstain from taking life ... who are virtuous and of good conduct. And the son also
is one who has gone for refuge to the Buddha ...
who abstain from taking life ... who is virtuous and of good conduct. This, bhikkhus, is the similar kind of son.
Now what, bhikkhus, is the inferior kind of son? In this instance
a son has a mother and father who have gone for refuge to the Buddha ... who abstain from taking life ... who are virtuous and of good conduct. But the son is one who has not gone refuge to the Buddha ... who does not abstain from taking life ... who is unvirtuous and of bad conduct. This, bhikkhus, is the inferior kind of son.
Thse, bhikkhus, are the three kinds of sons found existing in the world."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 이들 세 종류의 아들들이 세상에 현존하는 것으로 알려졌소. 세 종류가 무엇일까요? 탁월한 종류[의 아들], 비슷한 종류[의 아들] 그리고 열등한 종류[의 아들]이지요.
비구들이여! 그러면 무엇이 탁월한 종류의 아들일까요?
이 경우, 이 아들에게는 아버지와 어머님이 있는데 그들은 부처님[佛]에, 진리 법[法]에 그리고 승가[僧]에 귀의하지 않았으며, 남의 목숨을 취하는 일[殺生]․주어지지 않은 것을 취하는 일[偸盜]․감각적 욕망으로 [짓는] 못된 행위[邪淫]․거짓말[妄語]․게으름으로 인도하는 음료에 중독되는 일[飮酒]을 삼가지 않으며, 계를 어기고 나쁜 행실을 하는 사람들이오.
그러나 아들은 부처님[佛]에, 진리 법[法]에 그리고 승가[僧]에 귀의해 왔으며, 남의 목숨을 취하는 일[殺生]․주어지지 않은 것을 취하는 일[偸盜]․감각적 욕망으로 [짓는] 못된 행위[邪淫]․거짓말[妄語]․게으름으로 인도하는 음료에 중독되는 일[飮酒]을 삼가고, 계를 지키고 좋은 행실을 하는 사람이지요. 비구들이여! 이것이 탁월한 종류의 아들이오.
비구들이여! 그러면 무엇이 비슷한 종류의 아들일까요? 이 경우, 이 아들에게는 아버지와 어머님이 있는데 그들은 부처님[佛]에 귀의해 왔으며.... 남의 목숨을 취하는 일[殺生]을 삼가고.... 계를 지키고 좋은 행실을 하는 사람들이지요. 그리고 아들 또한 부처님[佛]에 귀의해 왔으며.... 남의 목숨을 취하는 일[殺生]을 삼가고.... 계를 지키고 좋은 행실을 하는 사람이지요. 비구들이여! 이것이 비슷한 종류의 아들이오.
비구들이여! 그러면 무엇이 열등한 종류의 아들일까요? 이 경우, 이 아들에게는 아버지와 어머님이 있는데 그들은 부처님[佛]에 귀의해 왔으며.... 남의 목숨을 취하는 일[殺生]을 삼가고.... 계를 지키고 좋은 행실을 하는 사람들이지요. 그러나 아들은 부처님[佛]에 귀의해오지 않았으며.... 남의 목숨을 취하는 일[殺生]을 삼가지 않고.... 계를 어기고 나쁜 행실을 하는 사람이지요. 비구들이여! 이것이 열등한 종류의 아들이오.
비구들이여! 이것들이 세상에 현존하는 것으로 알려진 세 종류의 아들들이오.”
The wise wish for a son
Who is superior or similar.
They do not wish for an inferior son,
One who disgraces the family.
But such sons in the world
Who are devoted lay followers,
Excelling in faith and virtue,
Liberal, without selfishness,
Shine forth in assemblies
Like the moon freed from clouds.
현명한 사람은 탁월하거나 비슷한
아들을 바라네.
그들은 가족의 명예를 더럽히는
열등한 아들을 바라지 않네.
그렇지만 세상에서
믿음과 계율이 뛰어나고,
관대하며 이기심이 없는
신심이 돈독한 재가신자들인 그런 아들들은
구름에서 빠져 나온 달처럼
사람들 무리 속에서 환하게 빛나네.
