92. The Hem of the Robe
옷자락
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, even though a bhikkhu might hold on to the hem of my robe and follow close behind me step by step, if he is covetous for objects, strongly passionate, malevolent, corrupt in thought, unmindful, uncomprehending, unconcentrated, of wandering mind and uncontrolled faculties, he is far from me and I am far from him. What is the reason? That bhikkhu does not see Dhamma. Not seeing Dhamma, he does not see me.
Bhikkhus, even though a bhikkhu might live a hundred leagues away, if he is not covetous for objects, not strongly passionate, not malevolent, uncorrupt in thought, with mindfulness established, clearly comprehending, concentrated, of unified mind and uncontrolled faculties, he is close to me and I am close to him. What is the reason? That bhikkhu sees Dhamma. Seeing Dhamma, he sees me."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 설사 어떤 비구가 내 옷자락을 잡고서 내 뒤를 한 발짝 한 발짝 바짝 따라온다고 할지라도, 만약 그가 욕망의 대상에 대해 갈망하고 욕정이 매우 강하며 악의가 있고 생각이 더러우며 마음을 챙기지 않고 분별력이 없으며 마음을 집중하지 못하고 마음이 [안정되지 않아] 오락가락 하며 감관이 제어되지 않았다면, 그는 내게서 멀리 [떨어져] 있고 나는 그에게서 멀리 [떨어져] 있는 [것이나 마찬가지]이지요. 이유가 무엇일까요? 그 비구는 진리 법을 보지 못하지요. 진리 법을 보지 못하니, 그는 나를 보지 못하지요.
비구들이여! 설사 어떤 비구가 300 마일 쯤 떨어진 곳에 살고 있다고 할지라도 만약 그가 욕망의 대상에 대해 갈망하지 않고 욕정이 강하지 않으며 악의가 없고, 생각이 더럽지 않으며 마음을 챙기고 분별력이 있으며 마음을 집중하고, 마음이 통일되었으며 감관이 제어되었다면, 그는 나와 가까이 있고 나는 그와 가까이 있는 [것이나 마찬가지]이지요. 이유가 무엇일까요? 그 비구는 진리 법을 보지요. 진리 법을 보니, 그는 나를 보지요.”
Though closely following behind,
Full of longings and resentment,
See how far away he is -
The desirous one from the desireless,
One unquenched from the quenched,
A greedy one from the one without greed.
But a wise person who by direct knowledge
Has fully understood the Dhamma,
Becomes desireless and tranquil
Like a calm unruffled lake.
See how close he is to him -
A desireless one to the desireless,
One quenched to the quenched,
The greedless one to the one without greed.
설사 뒤를 바짝 따른다 할지라도
갈망과 분노로 가득 차 있다면
그는 얼마나 멀리 떨어져 있는 지 보시오 -
욕망에 가득 찬 사람이 욕망 없는 분에게서,
[삼독심의 불을] 끄지 못한 사람이 멸진에 이른 분에게서,
탐욕스런 사람이 탐욕이 없는 분에게서.
그렇지만 자기 자신의 직접적인 지혜로
진리 법을 원만하게 이해해 온 현명한 사람은,
고요하게 물결 하나 일지 않는 호수처럼,
욕망이 없고 고요해지네.
그가 그 분에 얼마나 가까이 있는지 보시오 -
욕망이 없는 사람이 욕망 없는 분에게,
[삼독심의 불을] 끈 사람이 멸진에 이른 분에게,
탐욕이 없는 사람이 탐욕이 없는 분에게.
