90. Foremost Faith
으뜸가는 믿음
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, there are these three foremost kinds of faith.
What are the three?
Whatever beings there are, whether footless or two-footed or four-footed, with form or without form, percipient or non-percipient or neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient, of these the Tathagata is reckoned foremost, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One. Those who have faith in the Buddha have faith in the foremost, and for those with faith in the foremost the result will be foremost.
Whatever states there are, whether conditioned or unconditioned, of these detachment is reckoned foremost, that is, the subduing of vanity, the elimination of thirst, the removal of reliance, the termination of the round (of rebirths), the destruction of craving, detachment, cessation, Nibbana. Those who have faith in the Dhamma of detachment have faith in the foremost, and for those with faith in the foremost the result will be foremost.
Whatever communities or groups there are, bhikkhus, of these the Sangha of the Tathagata's disciples is reckoned foremost, that is, the four pairs of persons, the eight individuals. This Sangha of the Lord's disciples is worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of reverential salutation, the unsurpassable field of merit for the world. Those who have faith in the Sangha have faith in the foremost, and for those with faith in the foremost the result will be foremost.
These, bhikkhus, are the three foremost kinds of faith."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 이들 세 종류의 으뜸가는 믿음이 있소. 셋이 무엇일까요?
발이 없거나 두 발이 달렸거나 네 발이 달렸거나, 형상이 있거나 형상이 없거나, 지각력이 있거나 지각력이 없거나[非想] 지각력이 있지도 않고 없지도 않거나[非想非非想], 그 무슨 존재[衆生]들이 있던지 여래는 아라한, 원만하게 깨달으신 분, 가장 으뜸가는 분으로 평가되지요. [그러니] 부처님에게 믿음을 갖는 사람들은 가장 으뜸가는 분에게 믿음을 갖게 되고, 그리고 가장 으뜸가는 분에게 믿음을 가진 사람들에게는 그 과보가 으뜸이 갈 것이오.
조건[因緣]으로 이루어졌거나 조건으로 이루어지지 않았거나 그 무슨 법이 있던지, 이들 중에서 집착하지 않음[超然], 즉 자만심을 가라앉히는 것, 갈망의 제거, 의타심을 없애는 것, (재생의) 순환고리[輪廻]를 끝내는 것, 갈애의 소멸, 초연함[집착하지 않음], 멸진, 닙바나[涅槃]가 으뜸가는 것으로 여겨지지요. [그러니] 집착하지 않음이라는 법에 믿음을 갖는 사람들은 가장 으뜸가는 분에게 믿음을 갖게 되고, 그리고 가장 으뜸가는 분에게 믿음을 가진 사람들에게는 그 과보가 으뜸이 갈 것이오.
비구들이여! 그 무슨 공동체나 모임이 있던지, 이들 중에서 여래의 제자들의 승가, 다시 말해 네 쌍의 사람들, 여덟 개인들이 가장 으뜸가는 것으로 여겨지지요. 세존의 제자들의 [모임인] 이 승가는 기증을 받을 자격이 있고, 환대를 받을 자격이 있으며, 공양을 받을 자격이 있고, 존경의 인사를 받을 자격이 있으며 세상을 위해 [그 누구도] 능가할 수 없는 공덕의 밭[福田]이지요. 승가에 믿음을 갖는 사람들은 가장 으뜸가는 분에게 믿음을 갖게 되고,. 그리고 가장 으뜸가는 분에게 믿음을 가진 사람들에게는 그 과보가 으뜸이 갈 것이오.
비구들이여! 이것들이 세 종류의 가장 으뜸가는 믿음이지요.”
This is foremost for those with faith,
For those who know the foremost Dhamma:
Having faith in the Buddha as foremost,
Worthy of offerings, unsurpassed;
Having faith in the Dhamma as foremost,
The peace of detachment, bliss;
Having faith in the Sangha as foremost,
A field of merit unsurpassed.
Distributing gifts among the foremost,
Foremost is the merit that accrues;
Foremost their life and beauty,
Fame, reputation, happiness, and strength.
The wise one who gives to the foremost,
Concentrated on the foremost Dhamma,
Whether he becomes a deva or a human,
Rejoices in his foremost attainment.
믿음을 갖고 있는 사람들, 가장 으뜸가는 진리 법을 아는
사람들에게는 이것이 가장 중요하네:
공양을 받을 자격이 있는 분, 비할 데 없는 분인
부처님에 대한 믿음을 가장 으뜸가는 것으로 가짐;
집착하지 않는 평화, 안락인
진리 법에 대한 믿음을 가장 으뜸가는 것으로 가짐;
비할 데 없는 공덕의 밭[福田]인
승가에 대한 믿음을 가장 으뜸가는 것으로 가짐.
가장 으뜸가는 곳에 보시를 드리면
쌓이는 공덕도 가장 으뜸이네;
그들의 수명과 아름다움[容貌], 명성,
평판, 행복과 힘도 으뜸 가네.
으뜸가는 분께 보시하고
으뜸가는 진리 법에 [마음을] 집중하는 현자는
그가 신이 되든 인간이 되든
최상을 성취하여 기뻐하네.
