This was said by the Lord....
-
"Bhikkhus, overcome with his mind obsessed by three
-
kinds of wickedness, Devadatta will inevitably go to
-
a state of misery, to hell, for the duration of aeon.
-
What are the three? Overcome with his mind obsessed by evil desires ...; overcome with his mind obsessed by evil friends ...;
-
and although there was more that should have been done,
-
he stopped halfway through gaining a trifling attainment
-
of distinction. These, bhikkhus, are the three."
-

세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
-
“비구들이여! 세 종류의 나쁜 법에 사로잡힌 마음으로
-
[자신을 제대로] 가누지 못하게 된 데바닷타는 1겁 동안
-
비참한 지경, 지옥에 가게 될 것이 불가피하오.
-
셋이 무엇일까요? 나쁜 욕망에 사로잡힌 마음으로
-
[자신을 제대로] 가누지 못하게 된...; 나쁜 친구에
-
사로잡힌 마음으로 [자신을 제대로] 가누지 못하게 된....;
-
그리고 아직 할 일이 더 남아 있음에도 불구하고, 비범한
-
능력을 조금 성취하였다고 해서 중도에 그만두었지요.
-
비구들이여! 이것들이 세 가지이지요.”

Surely no one of evil desires
-
Is born again into this world.
-
Know that he goes to the bourn of those
-
Who live in the grip of evil desires.
-
-
I heard how Devadatta was
-
Regarded as a wise man,
-
One developed in meditation
-
Who shone as it were with fame.
-
-
Having thought himself his equal,
-
He assaulted the Tathagata
-
And went to the four-doored frightful place,
-
Avici the Unremitting Hell.
-
-
When one plots against an innocent
-
Who has done no evil deed,
-
That evil merely affects the one
-
Corrupt of mind and disrespectful.
-
-
One who thinks he could pollute
-
The ocean with a pot of poison
-
Would not be able to pollute it -
-
Awesome is that mass of water.
-
-
It is similar in attacking with abuse
-
The Tathagata who has reached perfection
-
And ever dwells with peaceful mind -
-
Abuse has no effect on him.
-
A wise man should befriend such a one
-
And constantly follow after him.
-
A bhikkhu who goes along his path
-
Can reach the end of suffering.
-

-
나쁜 욕망을 품은 사람은 단 하나도
-
이 세상에 다시 태어나지 않는 것이 확실하네.
-
그는 나쁜 욕망에 사로잡혀 살아가는 사람들이
-
있는 곳으로 가게 됨을 아시오.
-
-
데바닷타가 어떻게 해서 현자,
-
선정 수행을 닦은 사람,
-
명성을 갖춘 것처럼 빛난 사람이라고
-
여겨졌는지 나는 들었네.
-
-
자기가 그 분의 동격자라고 생각하고서
-
그는 여래를 괴롭혔고
-
그리하여 문이 네 개 있는 무서운 곳,
-
[고통이] 끊임없는 아비지옥[無間地獄]으로 갔네.
-
-
악행을 하나도 짓지 않은 죄 없는 사람을
-
해치려고 획책할 때,
-
그 악이 [오히려] 그 사람의 마음을
-
더럽게 하고 사람들의 존경을 받지 못하게 할 뿐이네.
-
-
독(毒) 한 병으로 [넓은] 바다를
-
오염시킬 수 있다고 생각하는 사람이
-
그것을 오염시키지 못하리 -
-
그 물이 얼마나 많은지.
-
-
완성의 [경지]에 이르렀고
-
늘 평화로운 마음으로 머무시는 여래를
-
독설[비방]로 공격하는 데 있어서도 그와 같아서
-
그에게는 독설[비방]이 아무런 영향도 미치지 못하네.
-
현명한 사람은 그와 같은 사람들과 친구가 되고
-
계속해서 그를 따라야 하리.
-
그[여래]의 길을 따라 가는 비구는
-
괴로움의 끝에 도달할 수 있네.
