84. For the Welfare of Many
다수의 복리를 위해서
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, these three persons appearing in the world appear for the welfare of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans. What three?
Here, bhikkhus, a Tathagata appears in the world, an Arahant, a Fully Awakened One, possessing perfect knowledge and conduct, a sublime one, a world-knower, an unsurpassed leader of persons to be tamed, a teacher of devas and humans, an enlightened one, a Lord. He teaches Dhamma that is good at the outset, good in the middle, and good at the end, with its correct meaning and wording, and he proclaims the holy life in its fulfilment and complete purity. This, bhikkhus, is the first person appearing in the world who appears for the welfare of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans.
Next, bhikkhus, there is a disciple of that teacher, an arahant, one whose taints are destroyed, the holy life fulfilled, who has done what has to be done, laid down the burden, attained the goal, destroyed the fetters of beings, and is completely released through final knowledge. He teaches Dhamma ... and he proclaims the holy life in its fulfilment and complete purity. This, bhikkhus, is the second person appearing in the world ... for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans.
And next, bhikkhus, there is a disciple of that teacher, a learner who is following the path, who has learnt much and is of virtuous conduct. He teaches Dhamma ... and he proclaims the holy life in its fulfilment and complete purity. This, bhikkhus, is the third person appearing in the world ... for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans.
These, bhikkhus, are the three persons appearing in the world who appear for the welfare of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 세상에 나타나는 이들 세 [종류의] 사람들은 많은 사람들의 복리를 위해, 많은 사람들의 행복을 위해, 세상에 대한 자애심(慈愛心)으로, 신들과 인간들의 이익과 복리와 행복을 위해 나타나지요. 셋이 무엇일까요?
비구들이여! 여기에 아라한[應供], 원만하게 깨달으신 분[正遍知], 지혜와 행이 원만하게 갖추어진 분[明行足], 가장 높은 분[無上士], 세상을 아는 분[世間解], 길들여야 할 사람들의 비할 데 없는 지도자[調御丈夫], 신들과 인간들의 스승[天人師], 깨달으신 분, 세존이신 여래가 세상에 나타나지요. 그는 처음도 좋고 중간도 좋으며 마지막도 좋은 진리 법을 정확한 의미와 표현으로 가르치고, 성스러운 삶이 성취되었고 완벽하게 청정해졌음을 선언하지요. 비구들이여! 이것이 세상에 나타나는 첫 번째 사람인데, 그는 많은 사람들의 복리를 위해, 많은 사람들의 행복을 위해, 세상에 대한 자애심(慈愛心)으로, 신들과 인간들의 이익과 복리와 행복을 위해 나타나지요.
비구들이여! 다음으로 저 스승님의 제자가 있는데, 그는 아라한, 때[煩惱]가 [모두] 소멸된 사람, 성스러운 삶을 성취한 사람, 해야 할 것을 [이미] 하였고 [미혹한 삶의] 짐을 내려놓았으며 목표에 도달하였고 존재라는 속박을 소멸하였으며 궁극의 지혜로 완전히 해탈한 사람이지요. 그는 ... 진리 법을 가르치고.... 성스러운 삶이 성취되었고 완벽하게 청정해졌음을 선언하지요. 비구들이여! 이것이 세상에 나타나는 두 번째 사람인데,... 신들과 인간들의 이익과 복리와 행복을 위해 [나타나지요].
비구들이여! 그리고 다음으로 저 스승님의 제자가 있는데, 그는 그 길을 따라서 배우는 사람, 많은 것을 배워 왔고 계행(戒行)을 갖춘 사람이지요. 그는 ... 진리 법을 가르치고.... 성스러운 삶이 성취되었고 완벽하게 청정해졌음을 선언하지요. 비구들이여! 이것이 세상에 나타나는 세 번째 사람인데,... 신들과 인간들의 이익과 복리와 행복을 위해 [나타나지요].
비구들이여! 이들이 [바로] 많은 사람들의 복리를 위해, 많은 사람들의 행복을 위해, 세상에 대한 자애심(慈愛心)으로, 신들과 인간들의 이익과 복리와 행복을 위해 세상에 나타나는 세 [종류의] 사람들이지요.”
The teacher, the great sage,
Is the first in the world;
Following him is the disciple
Whose composure is perfected;
And then the learner training on the path,
On who has learnt much and is virtuous.
These three are chief amongst devas and humans:
Illuminators, preaching Dhamma,
Opening the door to the Deathless,
They free many people from bondage.
Those who follow the path
Well taught by the unsurpassed
Caravan-leader, who are diligent
In the Sublime One's dispensation,
Make an end of suffering
Within this very life itself.
위대한 성인인 스승님은
세상에서 제일 가는 분;
그 분을 따르는 사람은
평정심을 원만히 갖춘 제자;
그리고 많은 것을 배워왔고 계율을 잘 지키는 사람,
[가르치신] 길에 따라 수행하는 배우는 사람[有學].
신들과 인간들 사이에서 이 세 사람이 으뜸:
[빛나는] 교화자(敎化者)들, 그들이
진리 법을 설하고 불사(不死)의 세계로 가는 문을 열어
많은 사람들을 속박에서 풀어 자유롭게 하네.
비할 데 없는 대상(隊商)의 지도자가 잘 가르치신
길을 따라서 [사는] 사람들,
가장 높은 분[無上士]의 가르침에 충실한 이들은
바로 이번 생애에
괴로움을 끝내네.
