81. Homage
존경
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, I have seen beings, overwhelmed and with minds obsessed by receiving homage, upon the perishing of the body after death take rebirth in a state of misery, a bad bourn, a state of ruin, hell. I have seen beings, overwhelmed and with minds obsessed by not receiving homage ... by both receiving homage and (later) not receiving homage, upon the perishing of the body after death take rebirth in a state of misery, a bad bourn, a state of ruin, hell.
I say this, bhikkhus, without having learnt it from another recluse or brahmin.... It is just because I myself have known it, seen it, and observed it, that I say: I have seen beings, overwhelmed and with minds obsessed by receiving homage... after death take rebirth in ... hell."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 존경을 받는 일로 해서 당황해하고 마음에 사로잡혀서 죽은 뒤 몸이 사라질 때 비참한 경지, 나쁜 곳, 파멸의 경지, 지옥에 다시 태어나는 존재[衆生]들을 나는 보아 왔소. 존경을 받지 못하는 일로 해서 당황해하고 마음에 사로잡혀서 [또한] 존경을 받는 일과 (후에) 존경을 받지 못하는 일 양쪽 모두로 해서... 죽은 뒤 몸이 사라질 때 비참한 경지, 나쁜 곳, 파멸의 경지, 지옥에 다시 태어나는 존재[衆生]들을 나는 보아 왔소.
비구들이여! 내가 또 다른 수행자나 바라문에게서 [들어서] 알지 않고 [직접 겪고서] 이것을 말하는 것이오. 내가 ‘비구들이여! 존경을 받는 일로 해서 당황해하고 걱정스런 마음으로... 죽은 뒤... 지옥에 다시 태어나는 존재[衆生]들을 나는 보아왔소.’라고 말하는 것은 내 스스로가 그것을 [직접] 알고, 보고 관찰하여 왔기 때문이오.”
He is one who lives diligently
With concentration undisturbed,
Both when homage is paid to him
And when he receives no homage.
Meditating continuously, gifted
With subtle view and insight,
Enjoying the destruction of grasping -
They call such a one a "true man."
존경을 받을 때와
존경을 받지 못할 때 모두,
그는 흐트러짐 없이 마음을 집중하여
열심히 살아가는 사람이네.
날카롭고 명석한 견해와 통찰력을 타고나서
계속해서 선정에 들고
집착의 소멸을 즐기네 -
사람들이 그와 같은 사람을 “진실한 사람”이라 부르네.
