78. Like Elements
비슷한 성질
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, it is according to like elements that beings associate with each other and come together. Beings of low disposition associate and come together with beings of low disposition. Beings of good disposition associate and come together with beings of good disposition. It was so in the past, it will be so in the future, and it is so in the present."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 존재[衆生]들이 서로 어울리고 함께 사귀는 것은 비슷한 성질들에 따르는 것이오. 저열한 성질을 가진 존재[衆生]들은 저열한 성질을 가진 존재[衆生]들과 어울리고 사귀지요. 좋은 성질을 가진 존재[衆生]들은 좋은 성질을 가진 존재[衆生]들과 어울리고 사귀지요. 그것은 과거에도 그랬었고, 미래에도 그럴 것이며 현재도 그와 같지요.”
Desire born of association
Is severed by non-association.
As one riding on a wooden plank
Would sink in the mighty ocean,
Even so one of virtuous life
Sinks by consorting with an idler.
Therefore shun an idle person,
One who makes little effort.
Live with those who dwell secluded,
The noble ones resolved and meditative,
Who are ever strenuous and wise.
사귐에서 생겨난 욕망은
사귀지 않음으로 해서 끊어지네.
나무 판자에 올라타고 있는 사람은
[아무리 애를 써도] 광대한 바다에서 가라앉듯이,
계를 지키며 살던 사람도
게으른 사람과 어울림으로 해서 가라앉고 마네.
그러므로 노력을 별로 하지 않는
게으른 사람을 피하시오.
홀로 떨어져 사는 분, 늘 정진하고 현명한 분,
결심이 굳고 선정에 드는
고귀하신 분과 더불어 살아가시오.
