104. Excelling in Virtue
계율에 출중(出衆)함
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, as to those bhikkhus who excel in virtue, excel in concentration, excel in wisdom, excel in release, excel in the knowledge and vision of release, who are advisors, instructors, and demonstrators, who can exhort, inspire, and encourage, and who are competent teachers of the true Dhamma - seeing those bhikkhus is very helpful, I say; listening to those bhikkhus, approaching them, attending upon them, remembering them, and following their example in going forth into homelessness is very helpful, I say. For what reason?
By following such bhikkhus, by associating with them and attending upon them, the aggregate of virtue as yet incomplete reaches completion of development, the aggregate of concentration, of wisdom, of release, and of knowledge and vision of release as yet incomplete reaches completion of development. Such bhikkhus as these are called teachers, caravan-leaders, fault-abandoners, dispellers of darkness, light-bringers, makers of radiance, luminaries, torch-bearers, bringers of illumination, noble ones, possessors of vision."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 계율[戒]에 출중하고 정신 집중[定]에 출중하며
지혜[慧]에 출중하고 해탈에 출중하며 해탈에 대한 지식과
비전[知見]에 출중한 비구들, 조언자․가르침을 주는 사람․
논증자(論證者)인 비구들, 열심히 권하고 분발하게 하며 격려하는
비구들 그리고 자격을 갖춘 진짜 진리 법의 스승들인 비구들에
대해서, 그런 비구들을 보는 것은 유익하다고 나는 말하지요.
그런 비구들의 [말을] 귀 기울여 듣는 것, 그들에게 다가가는 것,
그들을 돌보는 일, 그들에게 공양을 올리는 일 그리고 집 없는
상태로 출가한 그들의 본보기를 따르는 것은 매우 유익하다고
나는 말하지요. 무슨 이유 때문일까요?
그런 비구들을 따름으로써 그리고 그들과 함께 어울리고 그들을
돌봄으로 해서, 아직 완성되지 않은 계율의 덩어리[戒蘊]가 완전히
계발된 경지에 이르게 되며, 아직 완성되지 않는 정신 집중․지혜․
해탈 그리고 해탈에 대한 지식과 비전[知見]의 덩어리[定蘊․慧蘊․
解脫蘊․解脫知見蘊]가 완전히 계발된 경지에 이르게 되지요.
이들과 같은 비구들은 스승․대상(隊商)의 지도자․악행을 버린
사람․어두움을 떨쳐버린 사람․빛을 가져온 사람․광채를 만들어내는
사람․빛을 내는 사람[先覺者]․횃불을 든 사람․빛을 가져오는
사람․성인․안목을 갖춘 사람이라고 부르지요.”
For those who are knowledgeable
This is a state making for joy -
Living the life of Dhamma
Under the noble ones perfected in mind.
They clarify the true Dhamma,
Shining forth and illuminating it,
Those light-bringers, heroic sages,
Endowed with vision, dispelling faults.
Having heard their teaching,
The wise with perfect understanding
By directly knowing the end of birth
Come no more to renewal of being.
마음으로 완성에 이른 성자 아래에서
진리 법에 맞는 삶을 살아가고 있는
지혜로운 사람에게는
이것이 기쁨을 만들어내는 경지네.
비전[知見]을 타고났으며 악행을 떨쳐버리는,
저 빛을 가져오는 사람들, 영웅적인 성자들은
그것[法]을 환하게 비추면서
진짜 진리 법을 분명하게 밝혀주네,
그들의 가르침을 듣고 난
원만한 지혜를 갖춘 현자는
태어남의 끝을 정확히 알게 되므로
더 이상 존재를 되풀이[輪廻]하지 않네.
