93. The Fires
불
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, there are these three fires. What three? The fire of lust, the fire of hate, and the fire of delusion. These, bhikkhus, are the three fires."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 이들 세 가지 불이 있지요. 셋이 무엇일까요? 갈망[貪]의 불, 증오심[嗔]의 불 그리고 미망(迷妄; 痴)의 불이지요. 비구들이여! 이것들이 세 가지 불이오.”
The fire of lust burns mortals
Infatuated by sensual pleasures;
The fire of hate burns malevolent people
Who kill other living beings;
The fire of delusion burns the bewildered,
Ignorant of the Noble One's Dhamma.
Being unaware of these three fires,
Humankind delights in personal existence.
Unfree from the bonds of Mara
They swell the ranks of hell,
Existence in the animal realm,
Asura-demons and the sphere of ghosts.
But those engaged in practising
The Buddha's teaching day and night
Ever perceiving the body's foulness,
Extinguish the fire of lust.
Those best of humans by loving-kindness
Extinguish the fire of hate,
And they extinguish the fire of delusion
By wisdom that leads to penetration.
Having extinguished these fires,
Unwearied night and day,
Those discerning ones attain Nibbana
And overcome all suffering.
The noble seers, masters of knowledge,
Wise ones with perfect understanding,
By directly knowing the end of birth
Come no more to renewal of being.
갈망의 불은 감각적 쾌락에
얼빠져 있는 사람들을 태우고;
증오심의 불은 다른 살아있는 존재들을 죽이는
사악한 사람들을 태우며;
미망의 불은 성스러운 분의 진리 법을 알지 못하는,
[미혹에] 헤매고 있는 사람을 태우네.
이 세 가지 불에 대해 알지 못하므로,
사람들은 자신의 생존을 기뻐하네.
마라의 속박에서 풀려나지 못한 채
그들은 지옥의 구성원,
축생계의 존재, 아수라의 마귀들과
아귀들의 세계를 넘치게 하네.
그렇지만 밤낮으로 부처님의 가르침의
수행에 정진하는 사람들은
늘 [자기] 몸이 더러움을 관하면서
갈망의 불을 끄네.
사람들 중 가장 뛰어난 이들은
자비심으로 증오심의 불을 끄고,
[四聖諦에 대한] 통찰력으로 인도하는 지혜로
미망의 불을 끄네.
세 가지 불을 끄고
밤낮으로 지치지 않고 [정진해온]
분별력 있는 저 사람들은 닙바나를 성취하고
온갖 괴로움을 극복하네.
성스러운 선각자들[明眼], 지혜의 스승님들,
원만한 지혜를 갖춘 현자들은
‘태어남의 끝’을 바르게 알아
더 이상 존재를 되풀이[輪廻]하러 오지 않네.
